What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is a therapy based on the properties of water (also termed aquatic therapy), exercises can be tailored by a suitably qualified physiotherapist for an individual or class to improve their movement and function utilising a heated hydrotherapy pool.

What are the benefits of Hydrotherapy?

The warm temperature of the water allows your muscles to relax, this alone could increase or maintain the range of movement of your joints. The water also supports your weight helping to relieve painful joints and ease pain, making it easier to exercise. Improving or maintaining the muscle strength of your legs and arms can be achieved using the physical properties of the water (Bouyancy and Drag effects).

Hydrotherapy interventions are designed to improve or maintain:

  • function
  • aerobic capacity/endurance conditioning
  • balance, coordination and agility
  • body mechanics and postural stabilisation
  • flexibility
  • gait and locomotion
  • relaxation- muscle tone
  • muscle strength, power, and endurance

Access into and out of the water

We offer a number of options for people to access the water, the steps, a pool side hoist or a hoist directly from the changing areas. The pool is a uniform depth of 1.2 metres throughout, which is approximately chest height. There are railings around the edge of the pool for extra support should you require it.

How will hydrotherapy make me feel?

Hydrotherapy is a safe treatment for many conditions; however the warmth of the water and the exercise may make you feel tired and dehydrated.  This is normal, so we advise you drink plenty of water following hydrotherapy - many people choose to spend time in our relaxation area and have a drink before leaving the premises.

When Hydrotherapy may not be appropriate?

With certain medical conditions hydrotherapy may not be suitable. These include: Chlorine Allergies, Uncontrolled epilepsy, Wounds/Skin Infections, Angina/Heart Problems, Virus or an upset stomach, Incontinence, raised Temperature, recent Radiotherapy or a Respiratory problem. You must inform the staff if you have any of the above conditions and ALL users are required to complete a screening form prior to entry into the pool. If you have any doubts, please raise them with the staff on duty.
