Coppice and Oakside
Situated in the attractive Derbyshire market town of Ilkeston, and only a stone’s throw from our Churchview and Larklands homes, this lovely care home consists of two bungalows situated side by side. These purpose-built homes allow for the highest care to be delivered to up to ten adults with profound learning and physical disabilities, from the age of eighteen years upwards. The homes are in a predominantly residential part of the town and have the Derbyshire countryside on their doorstep.
Both houses have bedrooms that are individually decorated to reflect the personality and choices of each resident. The homes also have large and airy communal areas, including lounges and a dining room. Residents from both houses also have access to a sensory room that allows them to experience a range of tactile and visual stimuli. At the rear of the home is a large, secure patio area with decking and a sensory garden consisting of raised beds which allows residents to maintain their own fruit and vegetables.
At Coppice and Oakside we feel activities are crucial to our residents’ wellbeing, and we want everyone to enjoy a rich and fulfilling life whilst at the home. We undertake a wide range of activities providing stimulation and interest for all our residents. These are organised by a full-time activity coordinator. As well as activities within the home we also regularly organise trips out for our residents. As part of promoting the independence of our residents we source external activities and courses which particularly benefit our more able bodied residents.
Additionally encouraging independence is ‘The Garden’ at Coppice and Oakside. Residents are encouraged to develop the land available at the home by growing their own food. There is a greenhouse provided so that vegetables can be grown from seed, and our staff are very supportive in enabling the best possible growing results. An ongoing project ‘The Garden’ has already proved to be a great success with both residents and staff.
A larger scale extension of our activities programme is the annual holiday that each of our residents enjoys. These are undertaken either on a one to one basis, with a carer, or with friends. Every detail is catered for to ensure not just the safety and wellbeing of our residents but also that they get a holiday that truly reflects their wishes and interests. Examples of previous holidays have been trips to Disneyland Paris, the Peak District, a Motorhome experience, and a log cabin with a hot tub and sauna swimming pool.
Delivering person centred care is at the heart of everything we do. We develop individual care plans and each resident has two key workers who deal with specific aspects of a person’s care. Family involvement is also encouraged, and we often develop close and lasting relationships with relatives. We offer a very high standard of care for everyone, delivered by an experienced and committed team, who do everything they can to make our resident’s lives as rich and fulfilling as possible. We all focus on creating an environment which enables our residents to be as creative as possible, and aids them in carrying out day to day tasks that promote independence, confidence and self-worth.
